La canción que faltaba

The Song That Was Missing

Entonces Carla propuso algo distinto.

The full story in English

On Saturday afternoon, the band met in the neighborhood library hall. We were going to play at a neighborhood party that night. Carla arrived with her guitar, Leo with the bass, and Martín with the computer. I had the printed set list. Everything seemed under control.

But when we checked the order of the songs, I noticed that one was missing. I looked in my pocket, in my backpack, and even on my cell phone. Nothing. The final song was not there. On that page, I had also written down how we would finish the song. We all knew the song, but we had agreed on a different ending for the party. Carla looked at me and asked: "Are you sure you sent it by email?" I nodded, but I was already starting to doubt it.

Martín opened the computer and checked the file. After a few seconds, he said: "Here is the problem. The last page was not saved." Nobody spoke for a moment. Leo let out a short laugh and said: "Well, good thing we still have time." I felt embarrassed, because I had prepared everything carefully and still made a simple mistake.

Then Carla suggested something different. "Let's do a shorter version of that song and try the ending now," she said. It seemed like a good idea to me, but Leo was not convinced. He wanted to respect the original order. "If we change everything, later we'll get lost," he said. The discussion was brief, but the tension was obvious. Carla clarified that she only wanted to change the last song. Leo had understood that we would change the entire list. Although that reassured him, he asked us to rehearse the ending twice.

I took a deep breath and told them: "Let's try first. If it goes badly, we'll go back." That eased the mood. We started again, this time without looking for perfection. Carla signaled the start with the guitar, Leo followed with the bass, and Martín counted the rhythm by tapping the table. The version turned out better than expected.

When we finished, we looked at each other and smiled. The missing song was no longer a problem. We even discovered that the new ending sounded stronger. Before leaving, we saved the file in three different places and checked the list again. This time, nobody argued.
