La historia
Llegué al hotel poco después de las nueve, con el celular a punto de quedarse sin batería. Había viajado todo el día en autobús, así que solo quería darme una ducha y acostarme. En la recepción, una mujer joven me sonrió. Le dije mi nombre y le mostré el correo de confirmación. Ella tecleó algo en la computadora y volvió a revisar. "Qué raro. Aquí aparece una reserva, pero para mañana".
Al principio pensé que sería fácil corregir el error. Pero la recepcionista, Elena, me explicó que el hotel estaba casi lleno por un congreso médico. "Vamos a buscar una solución", dijo. Mientras hablaba por teléfono, yo observé el vestíbulo. Entonces se abrió el ascensor. Salió un empleado con una caja grande y preguntó si yo era el huésped de la habitación 304.

Te compensamos con desayuno y salida tardía". Llamó a un botones para que me ayudara con la mochila. Subimos por una escalera lateral porque el ascensor seguía ocupado con la caja equivocada.
La suite tenía una cama enorme y una nota: "Esperamos que descanses bien". Me senté y, por reflejo, revisé el correo. Entonces vi el detalle que había pasado por alto durante el viaje. Debajo de la fecha del día siguiente decía: "Llegada un día antes sujeta a disponibilidad". Solté una carcajada. Había confundido mi solicitud con una confirmación. Bajé para reconocer mi parte del error. Elena sonrió. "Qué bien que lo aclaramos".
Después de ducharme, pensé en lo ocurrido. El hotel debería haberme avisado, pero yo también había leído demasiado rápido. Al día siguiente, Elena me saludó como si nos conociéramos de siempre. Le agradecí otra vez mientras me servía café. "No hay problema. Para eso estamos". La reserva había sido confusa, pero su manera de escucharme había cambiado mi impresión del hotel.

The full story in English
I arrived at the hotel shortly after nine, with my cellphone about to run out of battery. I had traveled all day by bus, so I only wanted to take a shower and lie down. At the reception desk, a young woman smiled at me. I told her my name and showed her the confirmation email. She typed something into the computer and checked again. "How strange. There is a reservation here, but for tomorrow."
At first I thought it would be easy to correct the mistake. But the receptionist, Elena, explained that the hotel was almost full because of a medical conference. "We're going to look for a solution," she said. While she was speaking on the phone, I looked around the lobby. Then the elevator opened. An employee came out with a large box and asked whether I was the guest in room 304.
Then I laughed to keep myself from losing hope. "No, I arrived without a room." The employee apologized. He had taken the box to the wrong floor because the label was stained. Elena looked up. "You're Gabriel, right?" I nodded. She compared my reservation with an internal note. "Here it is. You asked to arrive a day early. Because of a last-minute change, they assigned you a quieter suite for tonight. Nobody told you."
That left me somewhere between annoyed and relieved. I would have appreciated being notified, although at least I would not have to look for another hotel. Elena noticed my expression. "I'm sorry about the confusion. We'll make it up to you with breakfast and late checkout." She called a bellhop to help me with my backpack. We went up a side staircase because the elevator was still occupied with the wrong box.
The suite had a huge bed and a note: "We hope you rest well." I sat down and, by reflex, checked the email. Then I saw the detail I had overlooked during the trip. Below the following day's date it said: "Arrival one day early subject to availability." I burst out laughing. I had confused my request with a confirmation. I went downstairs to acknowledge my part in the mistake. Elena smiled. "I'm glad we cleared that up."
After taking a shower, I thought about what had happened. The hotel should have notified me, but I had also read too quickly. The next day, Elena greeted me as if we had known each other forever. I thanked her again while I poured myself coffee. "No problem. That's what we're here for." The reservation had been confusing, but the way she listened to me had changed my impression of the hotel.
