Mientras esperaban, Tomás apareció antes de tiempo porque había tomado un autobús más rápido. Cuando abrió la puerta, todos se quedaron quietos un segundo. Al final, la fiesta siguió con música suave, risas y platos improvisados. Las servilletas resultaron más bonitas de lo esperado. El vecino bajó con la bebida en una jarra enorme, y Andrés regresó con las velitas. Tomás pidió un deseo antes de apagarlas. Luego abrazó a Lucía con fuerza. On Saturday afternoon, Lucía opened her apartment door with her cellphone in her hand and a scared expression. She had promised to organize a surprise birthday party for Tomás. Now she looked at the living room table without knowing where to start. She had a shopping list on the computer. There were some empty bags on the table, and she had three voice messages on her cellphone that she had not listened to. "If this goes badly, at least we're going to laugh for a while," she said.
At five o'clock Andrés, Paula, and Mireya arrived, each with something different. Andrés brought ice and cups. Paula brought a vanilla cake that smelled very good. Mireya showed up with gold balloons that made the apartment look more elegant than usual. But when checking the list, Lucía frowned. The candles, the napkins, and the nonalcoholic drink Tomás always asked for were missing. "How could we have forgotten that?" Paula asked. Everyone had followed the list, but no one had checked whether it was complete.
Lucía took a breath and called the corner shop right away. Don Rafael answered in his calm voice. "There are candles, but the napkins ran out a while ago," he told her. Mireya suggested a simple solution. She would bring some napkins from her home and ask the neighbor upstairs to bring down a drink. He always bought more than he needed. Andrés went to get the candles. Before leaving, he remarked: "In the end, everything gets solved by phone and through mutual help."
While they were waiting, Tomás showed up ahead of time because he had taken a faster bus. When he opened the door, everyone stayed still for a second.
