La historia
El sábado en la tarde, Julián llegó al apartamento de Ana con una bolsa de globos y otra de vasos. Ana ya tenía el pastel, las servilletas y varias sillas prestadas. "¿Ya llegó todo?", preguntó Julián. "Casi todo", dijo Ana. "Falta la música y falta que Laura no se entere de nada".
Mientras Ana ordenaba la mesa, Camila llegó con una caja de empanadas. También trajo su computador para poner la lista de canciones. Pero al abrir la caja, todos se quedaron en silencio. Las empanadas estaban frías y una bolsa se había abierto. "Qué pena", dijo Camila. "En el bus se volteó la caja".
Julián miró la hora y habló con calma. "No pasa nada. Yo bajo a la tienda y compro pan y más servilletas". Ana asintió. "De una, pero llévate mi celular. Así te escribo si Laura llama". Julián sonrió y salió rápido. En la tienda, pidió todo, pagó y volvió en menos de veinte minutos.
Cuando regresó, Camila ya había conectado el computador al parlante. La música empezó, pero sonó muy bajo. Además, la puerta del edificio se abrió de golpe y todos se callaron. Era Laura. Ella miró el pasillo y frunció el ceño. "¿Por qué están tan callados?", preguntó. Ana respiró hondo y dijo: "Porque te estábamos esperando".
Laura abrió mucho los ojos y luego se rió. En ese momento, Julián encendió las luces y todos gritaron: "¡Sorpresa!" Laura se llevó una mano al pecho. "Yo creí que habían cancelado todo", dijo. Camila le pasó una empanada caliente. "Casi se nos daña el plan", respondió Ana, "pero al final llegó todo a tiempo".
Más tarde, Laura bailó con sus amigos, tomó agua y probó un pedazo de pastel. También agradeció por la fiesta y por el cariño. Antes de irse, miró la mesa, la música y las caras contentas. "Qué bueno que me hicieron venir", dijo. Y todos siguieron hablando hasta muy tarde.

On Saturday afternoon, Julián arrived at Ana’s apartment with a bag of balloons and another of cups. Ana already had the cake, the napkins, and several borrowed chairs. "Has everything arrived already?" Julián asked. "Almost everything," Ana said. "The music is missing, and Laura must not find out about anything."
While Ana arranged the table, Camila arrived with a box of empanadas. She also brought her computer to play the song list. But when they opened the box, everyone went quiet. The empanadas were cold, and one bag had opened. "How embarrassing," Camila said. "On the bus, the box tipped over."
Julián looked at the time and spoke calmly. "It’s okay. I’ll go down to the corner shop and buy bread and more napkins." Ana nodded. "Deal, but take my cell phone. That way I can text you if Laura calls." Julián smiled and left quickly. At the shop, he asked for everything, paid, and came back in less than twenty minutes.
When he returned, Camila had already connected the computer to the speaker. The music started, but it sounded very low. Also, the building door opened suddenly, and everyone fell silent. It was Laura. She looked at the hallway and frowned. "Why are you all so quiet?" she asked. Ana took a deep breath and said: "Because we were waiting for you."
Laura opened her eyes wide and then laughed. At that moment, Julián turned on the lights and everyone shouted: "Surprise!" Laura put a hand to her chest. "I thought you had canceled everything," she said. Camila handed her a hot empanada. "Our plan almost fell apart," Ana replied, "but in the end everything arrived on time."
Later, Laura danced with her friends, drank water, and tried a piece of cake. She also thanked them for the party and for the affection. Before leaving, she looked at the table, the music, and the happy faces. "I’m glad you made me come," she said. And everyone kept talking until very late.
