La historia
Clara llegó temprano a su departamento y dejó las bolsas sobre la mesa. Había pasado la tarde preparando una cena de cumpleaños para su hermano Martín. Había música suave, platos limpios y una torta todavía sin decorar. Todo parecía bajo control, pero ella seguía mirando el celular cada pocos minutos.
A las ocho empezaron a llegar los invitados. Su prima Lucía entró con una fuente de empanadas y dijo: “Dale, ¿dónde te ayudo?”. Martín llegó después, con el cabello mojado por la lluvia y una sonrisa cansada. “Pensé que me iba a tocar venir en colectivo hasta acá”, comentó, mientras se sacaba la campera.
Cuando Clara quiso encender las velas, descubrió que faltaban dos. Revisó la cocina, abrió un cajón y miró dentro de una caja vacía. “No puede ser”, murmuró. Martín la oyó y se acercó enseguida. “¿Qué pasó?”, preguntó. Clara le mostró la torta y explicó el problema. Por un momento, todos quedaron callados.
Lucía reaccionó primero. “Yo tengo unas en mi mochila”, dijo. “No son del mismo color, pero sirven”. Otra prima fue a buscar fósforos. Martín, que al principio había pensado que se trataba de un detalle menor, entendió de golpe que Clara se había esforzado mucho para que todo saliera bien. Le sonrió con afecto y le dijo: “Tranqui, lo resolvemos”.
Minutos después, la mesa estaba lista otra vez. Las velas nuevas quedaron un poco torcidas, pero nadie les dio importancia. Clara apagó la luz del comedor y todos se acercaron a la torta. Martín cerró los ojos, pidió un deseo y sopló con fuerza. Esta vez sí pudo apagar las velas de un solo intento.
Entonces Clara levantó su copa y dijo que quería agradecerles por haber venido. También contó que tenía otra sorpresa. Fue a la computadora, abrió una carpeta y puso una presentación con fotos viejas de Martín. Había imágenes de excursiones, cumpleaños de la infancia y una cena familiar que todos recordaban con cariño. Martín se quedó mirándola, emocionado y sin palabras.
La noche terminó con risas, más comida y una foto grupal al lado de la torta. Antes de irse, Martín abrazó a Clara y le dijo que la cena había sido perfecta, aunque empezara con un susto. Clara por fin dejó el celular sobre la mesa y sonrió. Esta vez no necesitaba revisar nada. Todo había salido bien.

The full story in English
Clara arrived early at her apartment and left the bags on the table. She had spent the afternoon preparing a birthday dinner for her brother Martín. There was soft music, clean plates, and a cake that was still undecorated. Everything seemed under control, but she kept looking at her cellphone every few minutes.
At eight o'clock the guests started to arrive. Her cousin Lucía came in with a tray of empanadas and said: “Come on, where do I help you?”. Martín arrived later, with his hair wet from the rain and a tired smile. “I thought I was going to have to come here by bus,” he commented, while taking off his jacket.
When Clara wanted to light the candles, she discovered that two were missing. She checked the kitchen, opened a drawer, and looked inside an empty box. “This can't be,” she murmured. Martín heard her and came over right away. “What happened?” he asked. Clara showed him the cake and explained the problem. For a moment, everyone stayed silent.
Lucía reacted first. “I have some in my backpack,” she said. “They are not the same color, but they work.” Another cousin went to look for matches. Martín, who at first had thought it was a minor detail, suddenly understood that Clara had made a big effort so everything would turn out well. He smiled at her affectionately and said: “Relax, we'll sort it out.”
A few minutes later, the table was ready again. The new candles were a little crooked, but nobody cared. Clara turned off the dining room light and everyone gathered around the cake. Martín closed his eyes, made a wish, and blew hard. This time he was able to put out the candles on the first try.
Then Clara raised her glass and said that she wanted to thank them for coming. She also said that she had another surprise. She went to the computer, opened a folder, and put on a presentation with old photos of Martín. There were pictures of trips, childhood birthdays, and a family dinner that everyone remembered fondly. Martín just kept looking at her, emotional and speechless.
The night ended with laughter, more food, and a group photo next to the cake. Before leaving, Martín hugged Clara and told her that the dinner had been perfect, even though it had started with a scare. Clara finally put her cellphone on the table and smiled. This time she did not need to check anything. Everything had gone well.
