Su hermano Luis cumplía treinta años, y ella había organizado una fiesta sorpresa con ayuda de dos vecinos y tres amigos. El plan parecía sencillo. Cada uno traería algo, y Luis llegaría más tarde, cuando ya estuviera todo listo. Marina había dejado el salón bastante despejado, pero todavía quedaban globos en una bolsa y platos sobre la mesa de la cocina.
A las seis, llegó Nora con una tarta de chocolate y una cara de preocupación. «Tengo un problema», dijo. «He escrito a Pablo, pero no sé si ha entendido bien la hora». Cuando por fin llegó Pablo, ya había música, vasos en la mesa y alguien cantando demasiado alto. Luis levantó su vaso y dijo que nunca había celebrado un cumpleaños tan raro ni tan bonito. Marina sonrió, cansada pero contenta. Había empezado el día pensando en horarios y mensajes, y lo terminaba escuchando risas en todas las habitaciones. Al final, la fiesta no salió perfecta. Salió mejor de lo que esperaba.

On Saturday afternoon, Marina was in her apartment with the mobile phone in one hand and the shopping list in the other. Her brother Luis was turning thirty, and she had organized a surprise party with the help of two neighbors and three friends. The plan seemed simple. Everyone would bring something, and Luis would arrive later, when everything was already ready. Marina had left the living room fairly clear, but there were still balloons in a bag and plates on the kitchen table.
At six o'clock, Nora arrived with a chocolate cake and a worried face. "I have a problem," she said. "I wrote to Pablo, but I don't know if he understood the time correctly." Marina looked at the mobile phone and saw that the last message had been cut off. Pablo thought the party was at eight, not at seven thirty. That meant the plan could go wrong. If Luis came back early, he would find only half the people there and the lights still off.
Marina took a deep breath and started making phone calls. She asked one person to take the fastest bus. She told another not to forget the cheese. Meanwhile, her mother, who was in the kitchen, reminded her that it was not worth getting nervous. "Okay, but today everything depends on timing," Marina replied. At that moment, the doorbell rang. It was Luis. Nobody expected him to arrive early, because his boss had told him to leave late.
Marina opened the door only a little and froze. Luis was carrying a huge box and looked tired, but he was smiling. "I left work early," he explained. Marina looked at him without knowing what to say.
