La historia
El viernes llegué temprano a la oficina en Lima. Mientras preparaba café, escuché a mi compañero Andrés hablar por celular. Dijo que necesitaba cambiar de horario y que el lunes empezaría algo nuevo. Como últimamente parecía cansado, pensé que había encontrado otro trabajo. Me alegró la noticia.
A la hora del almuerzo, varios compañeros nos sentamos juntos. Sin pensarlo mucho, le pregunté: "¿Por qué no nos has contado que te vas?" Andrés dejó su vaso sobre la mesa. "¿Que me voy? ¿De dónde has sacado eso?" Todos dejaron de conversar y me miraron.
Le expliqué lo que había escuchado junto a la cafetera. Mientras hablaba, noté que su expresión cambiaba. "Voy a estudiar por las noches", respondió. "Todavía no he hablado con la jefa sobre mi horario". Entonces comprendí que había entendido mal. Me dio vergüenza haber hecho aquella pregunta delante de todos.
Los demás volvieron a su conversación, pero Andrés siguió comiendo en silencio. Al terminar, me acerqué a él y le pedí disculpas en voz baja. "No debí sacar conclusiones sin preguntarte primero". Él me explicó que prefería hablar de sus planes cuando tuviera una respuesta de la jefa.
"Puedes contar conmigo si necesitas ayuda con el trabajo", le dije. Andrés sonrió un poco. "Gracias, Lucía. Por ahora, solo necesito que me dejes dar mis propias noticias". Tenía razón. Le prometí que no comentaría sus planes con nadie más. Después recogimos los platos y regresamos a la oficina.
El lunes, Andrés nos contó que la jefa había aceptado su nuevo horario. Esta vez esperé hasta que terminó de hablar. Luego lo felicité por sus estudios. Antes de volver a mi escritorio, me pidió ayuda con una tarea. Me alegró que todavía confiara en mí.

The full story in English
On Friday I arrived early at the office in Lima. While I was making coffee, I heard my coworker Andrés talking on his phone. He said he needed to change his schedule and that he would start something new on Monday. Since he had seemed tired lately, I thought he had found another job. I was happy about the news.
At lunchtime, several coworkers and I sat together. Without thinking much about it, I asked him, "Why haven't you told us you're leaving?" Andrés put his glass down on the table. "I'm leaving? Where did you get that idea?" Everyone stopped talking and looked at me.
I explained what I had heard by the coffee maker. As I spoke, I noticed his expression changing. "I'm going to study in the evenings," he replied. "I haven't spoken to the boss about my schedule yet." Then I realized that I had misunderstood. I felt embarrassed about having asked that question in front of everyone.
The others went back to their conversation, but Andrés kept eating in silence. When we finished, I went over to him and apologized quietly. "I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions without asking you first." He explained that he preferred to talk about his plans once he had an answer from the boss.
"You can count on me if you need help with work," I told him. Andrés smiled a little. "Thanks, Lucía. For now, I just need you to let me share my own news." He was right. I promised him I wouldn't discuss his plans with anyone else. Then we cleared the plates and went back to the office.
On Monday, Andrés told us that the boss had approved his new schedule. This time I waited until he finished speaking. Then I congratulated him on his studies. Before I returned to my desk, he asked me for help with a task. I was glad he still trusted me.
