La historia
El martes a la tarde, Sofía volvió del colegio mojada y con mala cara. Su papá estaba en la cocina, ordenando vasos. “¿Dónde dejaste la carpeta azul de mamá?”, le preguntó apenas la vio entrar. Sofía se quedó quieta. “Yo la vi sobre la mesa de la cocina ayer. Después no la toqué”, dijo. El papá frunció el ceño, porque esa carpeta tenía los papeles de la reunión escolar de esa noche.
Buscaron en el comedor, en el pasillo y hasta debajo del sillón. Cada vez que abrían una puerta, entraba aire frío y la lluvia sonaba más fuerte. Sofía empezó a ponerse nerviosa. “Si no aparece, mi mamá se va a enojar”, dijo. Su papá respiró hondo. “No saques conclusiones tan rápido. Primero hay que pensar”, respondió. Entonces recordó que su esposa había salido temprano con una bolsa de ropa para donar.
Sofía fue hasta el lavadero y abrió la bolsa que estaba junto al lavarropas. Adentro había medias, una bufanda y la carpeta azul. “¡Ah, no! La metí yo”, dijo ella, sorprendida. “La vi en la mesa y pensé que estaba en el lugar equivocado. La guardé para que no se mojara.” Su papá la miró y no pudo enojarse. “Bueno, por lo menos apareció”, dijo con una sonrisa cansada.
Más tarde, mientras la lluvia aflojaba, revisaron la carpeta juntos. Faltaba una hoja con anotaciones, así que Sofía se ofreció a buscarla en su mochila. “No hace falta que cargues con todo sola”, le dijo su papá. Ella asintió y, por primera vez en toda la tarde, se quedó tranquila. Cuando encontró la hoja, también encontró una nota vieja de la escuela primaria. La leyó en voz baja y se rió. “Decía que yo era prolija. Eso sigue siendo discutible”, comentó.
Cuando llegó la mamá, encontró la mesa lista y la carpeta completa. Miró a Sofía, después al papá, y enseguida entendió que algo había pasado. “¿Hubo problema?”, preguntó. “Nada grave”, dijo el papá. “Solo una carpeta que se escondió donde no debía.” Sofía se apuró a explicar todo, aunque ya no hacía falta. Su mamá sonrió. “La próxima vez, avisen antes de hacer una misión de rescate”, dijo. Y los tres se rieron, ya más tranquilos.

On Tuesday afternoon, Sofía came back from school wet and in a bad mood. Her dad was in the kitchen, putting away glasses. “Where did you leave Mom's blue folder?” he asked as soon as he saw her come in. Sofía stood still. “I saw it on the kitchen table yesterday. After that, I did not touch it,” she said. Her dad frowned, because that folder had the papers for that night's school meeting.
They searched in the dining room, in the hall, and even under the sofa. Every time they opened a door, cold air came in and the rain sounded louder. Sofía started to get nervous. “If it does not show up, my mom is going to get angry,” she said. Her dad took a deep breath. “Do not jump to conclusions so quickly. First we have to think,” he replied. Then he remembered that his wife had left early with a bag of clothes to donate.
Sofía went to the laundry area and opened the bag that was next to the washing machine. Inside there were socks, a scarf, and the blue folder. “Oh no! I put it there,” she said, surprised. “I saw it on the table and thought it was in the wrong place. I put it away so it would not get wet.” Her dad looked at her and could not stay angry. “Well, at least it showed up,” he said with a tired smile.
Later, while the rain let up, they checked the folder together. A page with notes was missing, so Sofía offered to look for it in her backpack. “There is no need for you to carry everything by yourself,” her dad told her. She nodded and, for the first time all afternoon, felt calm. When she found the page, she also found an old note from elementary school. She read it quietly and laughed. “It said that I was neat. That is still debatable,” she commented.
When the mom arrived, she found the table ready and the folder complete. She looked at Sofía, then at her dad, and immediately understood that something had happened. “Was there a problem?” she asked. “Nothing serious,” said the dad. “Just a folder that hid where it should not have.” Sofía hurried to explain everything, although it was no longer necessary. Her mom smiled. “Next time, let me know before you do a rescue mission,” she said. And the three of them laughed, now more relaxed.
