La historia
Laura salió del trabajo el viernes con ganas de conocer a Hugo. Llevaban tres semanas escribiéndose y, por fin, habían quedado para tomar un café cerca de la estación. Ella llegó diez minutos antes. Miró el teléfono, se arregló el pelo y pidió un vaso de agua. Había dicho que llevaría una chaqueta verde, así que pensó que él la vería enseguida.
Hugo llegó después de coger el autobús. Entró en la cafetería, vio a una chica junto a la ventana y pensó que era Laura. Se acercó y dijo: «Hola, soy Hugo». La chica levantó la cabeza y sonrió, pero dijo que se llamaba Marta. Los dos se quedaron callados un momento. Entonces Hugo miró otra mesa y vio a Laura con la chaqueta verde.
Laura se acercó, explicó la confusión y los tres rieron un poco. Marta dijo que esperaba a otra persona y se cambió de mesa. Al principio, Laura estaba seria, porque pensaba que Hugo no la había visto. Él explicó que había recibido un mensaje con la dirección, pero había entendido mal la última línea. Creía que la cita era en la cafetería de la plaza, no en la de la estación. Laura también se había confundido, porque había enviado el nombre del lugar con prisa desde el trabajo. «Vaya lío», dijo ella. «Sí, pero ya estamos aquí», respondió él.
Pidieron un café y una tostada para compartir. Al hablar, descubrieron que les gustaban las mismas películas y los paseos largos. Hugo dijo que le gustaba la forma en que Laura escribía. Ella se quedó callada un segundo y luego preguntó si hablaba en serio. Él sonrió y contestó que sí, que no estaba bromeando. Laura notó que se había relajado. La conversación empezó a salir sola.
Cuando terminaron, salieron despacio de la cafetería y caminaron hacia la estación. Hugo le dijo que, si quería, la llamaría el sábado para dar un paseo. Laura contestó que le venía bien. The full story in English
Laura left work on Friday eager to meet Hugo. They had been writing to each other for three weeks and, at last, had arranged to have a coffee near the station. She arrived ten minutes early. She looked at the phone, fixed her hair, and asked for a glass of water. She had said that she would wear a green jacket, so she thought he would see her soon.
Hugo arrived after taking the bus. He went into the café, saw a girl next to the window, and thought she was Laura. He went over and said, “Hi, I’m Hugo.” The girl looked up and smiled, but said that her name was Marta. The two of them stayed quiet for a moment. Then Hugo looked at another table and saw Laura in the green jacket.
Laura went over, explained the confusion, and the three of them laughed a little. Marta said that she was waiting for another person and moved to another table. At first, Laura was serious, because she thought that Hugo had not seen her. He explained that he had received a message with the address, but had misunderstood the last line. He thought that the date was in the café in the square, not the one at the station. Laura had also got confused, because she had sent the name of the place in a hurry from work. “What a mess,” she said. “Yes, but we are here now,” he answered.
They ordered a coffee and a slice of toast to share. While they talked, they discovered that they liked the same films and long walks. Hugo said that he liked the way Laura wrote. She stayed quiet for a second and then asked if he was serious. He smiled and answered yes, that he was not joking. Laura noticed that she had relaxed. The conversation started to flow naturally.
When they finished, they left the café slowly and walked toward the station. Hugo told her that, if she wanted, he would call her on Saturday to take a walk. Laura answered that that worked for her. Before saying goodbye, they exchanged numbers again, just in case. This time neither of them had any doubts. Laura went home happy, thinking that the misunderstanding had been small, but the afternoon had gone very well.
