La historia
Ana llegó al edificio cinco minutos antes de la cita. Había visto el aviso en su celular la noche anterior y había enviado un mensaje de inmediato. Necesitaba mudarse antes de fin de mes, así que no podía seguir esperando. Además, ese día quería mirar dos departamentos más si tenía tiempo.
La agente le abrió la puerta y le dijo que el departamento estaba en el tercer piso. Mientras subían por las escaleras, Ana pensó que el pasillo olía a pintura fresca. Eso le pareció buena señal. La agente sonrió y dijo que habían terminado la limpieza esa mañana.
Dentro, la sala era más amplia de lo que esperaba. Había dos ventanas grandes, mucha luz y un balcón pequeño. La cocina también estaba limpia. Ana sonrió. "Qué bien", dijo. "Parece un lugar cómodo". Luego miró el baño y notó que tenía una ventana pequeña, algo que no había visto en las fotos.
La agente le explicó el precio del alquiler y el depósito. Ana hizo las cuentas rápido y vio que podía pagarlo, pero solo si no tenía otros gastos grandes ese mes. Entonces preguntó por el contrato. Ana arrived at the building five minutes before the appointment. She had seen the notice on her cellphone the night before and had sent a message right away. She needed to move before the end of the month, so she could not keep waiting. In addition, that day she wanted to look at two more apartments if she had time.
The agent opened the door for her and told her that the apartment was on the third floor. While they went up the stairs, Ana thought the hallway smelled like fresh paint. That seemed like a good sign. The agent smiled and said that they had finished cleaning that morning.
Inside, the living room was larger than she expected. There were two large windows, a lot of light, and a small balcony. The kitchen was also clean. Ana smiled. "How nice," she said. "It seems like a comfortable place." Then she looked at the bathroom and noticed that it had a small window, something she had not seen in the photos.
The agent explained the rent and the deposit to her. Ana did the math quickly and saw that she could pay for it, but only if she did not have other big expenses that month. Then she asked about the contract. The woman answered that it was for one year, with the possibility of renewing, although there was a clause that could change the increase after six months.
When they went down to the inner courtyard, Ana heard a loud noise. It was coming from the apartment next door. The agent hesitated for a second and then said that the neighbor was doing a repair. But Ana was not sure. The noise came back every few minutes. It was as if the wall shook a little, and that bothered her more than she wanted to show.
Ana took a deep breath. She liked the place, but she did not want to sign with doubts. She asked the agent for a copy of the rules and asked whether she could come back another day to listen to the building better. The woman agreed, although she seemed to want to close the deal quickly. She also told her that, if she signed that week, they could hold the price for a few days.
When she left, Ana called her sister. She told her everything and, for the first time in the afternoon, she felt calm. Maybe that apartment was not the right one yet. But she already had something more valuable: time to decide well. And, while she waited for the bus, she thought that a useful visit does not always end with a signature, but with one less doubt.
