La mesa cambiada
The Changed Table

“Aquí no aparece tu reserva”, dijo.

The full story in English
Sofía and Daniel arrived at the restaurant at eight. They had reserved a table to celebrate Daniel’s birthday. At the entrance, the hostess accepted his name, but then frowned. “Your reservation does not appear here,” she said. Behind her, the noise of the plates and several conversations could be heard at the same time. Daniel looked around and saw all the tables occupied. Sofía took a deep breath and tried not to show nerves.
Daniel felt heat rise to his face. Sofía looked at her cell phone and opened the confirmation email. The message said a different time. She had written down the reservation in a hurry and had confused eight with nine. “How embarrassing”, Daniel said in a low voice. “I also saw the time wrong, but I did not want to correct you because I thought you were sure.”
The hostess did not seem annoyed. She explained that the place was full, but that she could check on a table later. Sofía told her the truth without beating around the bush. “It was my fault. If we can wait, we’ll wait”, she said. The hostess nodded and offered them a high counter by the window. From there, they could see the street and the waiters coming and going without stopping.
While they waited, Daniel said that he had been upset at first, but that he had already gotten over it. “Actually, it made me laugh when I saw your face”, he confessed. Sofía gave a short laugh and then lowered her gaze. “I thought you were going to get more angry”, she admitted. The waiter brought them water and said that sometimes people arrived with the time mixed up. “You are not the first ones”, he said. That comment took some of the tension away from them.
Twenty minutes later, the hostess came back. She told them that there was already a free table. This time, Sofía checked the screen again before standing up. “Yes, now it really is ours”, Daniel said, this time more calmly. When they reached their table, they saw a small plate with a candle. The hostess had asked for a simple birthday detail. Daniel opened his eyes in surprise and then smiled. Next time, Sofía promised, she would check everything more calmly.
Dinner turned out better than they had expected. They shared tacos, salad, and a small cake that the restaurant gave them for the birthday. Between bites, they talked about other times when a mix-up had changed their plans, although not always for the worse. In the end, Sofía thanked everyone for their patience. Daniel raised his glass and said that that scare had ended in a very good night. The mistake had been awkward, yes, but it had also reminded them that a pleasant outing does not depend on everything going perfectly.
