Una despedida con condiciones
A Farewell with Conditions
On Friday, Teresa was retiring after thirty years at the same company. Clara had been preparing a surprise party with her colleagues for weeks. They had booked a restaurant and gathered old photos for a video. They still had to choose who would give the speech, a task nobody seemed to want.
On Tuesday, while they were reviewing some accounts, Teresa mentioned a former colleague's farewell. "He had a bad time. He didn't like being the center of attention, but he had to smile for two hours." Clara stopped writing. Until then, she had taken it for granted that anyone would appreciate a celebration like that.
That afternoon, Clara shared her concern with the team. Luis suggested going ahead because the restaurant had already received a payment. "If we ask her, it will stop being a surprise," he said. "And if we don't ask her, perhaps it will end up being an obligation," Clara replied. Nobody answered immediately. They all wanted to show her affection, although they disagreed on how to do it.
The next day, Clara decided to speak with Teresa alone. She told her about the restaurant and acknowledged that she should have asked her first. Teresa smiled, but took a moment to respond. "I'm excited about saying goodbye to all of you. What I don't want is to listen to speeches about my life while everyone watches me."
Teresa asked for a simple meal, with no video or speeches. She also wanted the two people who cleaned the office every afternoon to attend. Their schedules almost never allowed them to take part in celebrations. Clara felt ashamed when she realized that she hadn't included them. She called the restaurant and managed to change the time without losing the money.
On Friday, the conversation moved from work to vacations and recipes. Without a presentation to follow, some people seemed unsure at first. Then Teresa said that she planned to study cooking, although her family doubted her patience. "After thirty years waiting for your reports, I have plenty of patience." Luis was the first to laugh.
At the end, Clara handed her an envelope with the photos. Teresa could look at them whenever she wanted, without an audience. "Thank you for changing the plans," she told her. Clara had feared that the meal would turn out to be too simple. Now she understood that a celebration could be special without anyone having to act as expected.
