During a journey with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth visited Pemberley because she thought Darcy was away. She heard a servant’s favourable comments and met him by chance as she left. He welcomed her aunt and uncle respectfully. Elizabeth was discovering another side of his character when she learned that Lydia had run away with Wickham. She had to return home.
In that society, Lydia’s elopement could harm all the sisters. Wickham had debts and did not intend to marry her. Darcy found the couple and acted in secret: he paid and negotiated until the marriage became possible. He asked for no thanks. When Elizabeth learned who had helped, she understood that his actions said more than his first words.
