La llegada de Bingley, joven y rico, animó sus esperanzas. Durante un baile, Jane atrajo su atención. A primera vista, su simpatía hacía fácil imaginar una relación feliz.
Darcy, en cambio, se mantuvo distante y despreció la posibilidad de bailar con Elizabeth. Ella oyó la observación y no la olvidó. Elizabeth, por su parte, usó el humor para contar lo ocurrido, pero su juicio quedó marcado. Aunque Darcy empezó después a admirar su inteligencia, ella interpretaba sus silencios como nuevas pruebas de orgullo. Ninguno comprendía todavía la mirada del otro.
The Bennet family had five daughters and an estate that, when the father died, would pass to a male relative. Mrs Bennet therefore saw every marriage as a matter of security. The arrival of the young, wealthy Bingley raised her hopes. During a dance, Jane caught his attention. At first sight, his friendliness made a happy relationship easy to imagine.
Darcy, by contrast, remained distant and dismissed the possibility of dancing with Elizabeth. She heard the remark and did not forget it. Elizabeth, for her part, used humour to tell what had happened, but her judgment was shaped by it. Although Darcy later began to admire her intelligence, she interpreted his silences as further evidence of pride. Neither yet understood the other’s perspective.
