Lady Catherine intentó impedir una unión semejante entre su sobrino y Elizabeth, apelando al rango de su familia. Elizabeth no aceptó renunciar a un futuro que debía elegir por sí misma. Cuando Darcy conoció aquella conversación, entendió que quizá su primera negativa ya no expresaba lo que sentía.
Darcy se declaró de nuevo, esta vez sin dar por segura una respuesta favorable. Elizabeth le explicó cuánto habían cambiado sus sentimientos. Hablaron de sus errores con una sinceridad que antes les faltaba, y el respeto acompañó al afecto. Las dos hermanas se casaron con los hombres que amaban. Bingley’s return allowed him and Jane to clarify their feelings and agree to marry. Lady Catherine tried to prevent a similar union between her nephew and Elizabeth by invoking her family’s rank. Elizabeth refused to give up a future she should choose for herself. When Darcy learned of that conversation, he understood that perhaps her first refusal no longer expressed how she felt.
Darcy declared his love again, this time without taking a favourable answer for granted. Elizabeth explained how much her feelings had changed. They spoke about their mistakes with a sincerity they had previously lacked, and respect accompanied affection. The two sisters married the men they loved. Elizabeth lost neither her independence nor her humour: she had learned to see more clearly, not to keep silent.
