B1 · Chapter 1 of 3 · Edition 1

Una despensa extraordinaria

An extraordinary pantry

A court mouse invited another mouse, who lived in the country, to eat. He did so with such kindness that the country mouse accepted without hesitation. He was used to his small home in the earth and a simple diet based on pulses. The visit would allow him to discover a very different way of life.

On arriving, he discovered that his friend was staying in a pantry full of food. There was fresh Dutch cheese, bacon and large pieces of cured meat. Hams and sausages hung from the walls and ceiling. The visitor had never seen so much food gathered in one place. It seemed like accommodation fit for a king of mice.

The host offered him his best morsels and encouraged him to enjoy the visit. The two jumped from one cheese to another, delighted by the smells and flavours. As he ate, the country mouse compared that abundance with the pulses at home. For the moment, life at court seemed much more attractive to him.
