La merienda del Sombrerero y la Liebre de Marzo parecía una buena ocasión para descansar. Sin embargo, los anfitriones negaron que hubiera sitio, pese a las sillas vacías. Un lirón dormía entre ellos. Alicia se sentó y trató de resolver un acertijo del Sombrerero. Cuando descubrió que ni él conocía la respuesta, empezó a dudar del sentido de aquella conversación.
El Sombrerero explicó que se había peleado con el Tiempo; desde entonces, siempre era la hora del té. Hablaban sin parar y cambiaban de sitio, dejando atrás las tazas sucias. En lugar de escuchar las preguntas de Alicia, torcían sus palabras. Ella abandonó la mesa, regresó al salón y, usando lo aprendido sobre su tamaño, logró entrar en el jardín.
The Hatter and the March Hare’s tea party seemed a good opportunity to rest. However, the hosts denied there was any room, despite the empty chairs. A dormouse slept between them. Alice sat down and tried to solve a riddle from the Hatter. When she discovered that even he did not know the answer, she began to question the point of that conversation.
The Hatter explained that he had quarrelled with Time; ever since, it had always been teatime. They talked without stopping and changed places, leaving dirty cups behind. Instead of listening to Alice’s questions, they twisted her words. She left the table, returned to the hall and, using what she had learned about her size, managed to enter the garden.
