Jim recognized the same friendly voice that had reassured him, now organizing a betrayal.
His warning reached Smollett in time for the loyal men to prepare their weapons. On the island, Jim separated from the sailors and met Ben Gunn, a former member of Flint’s crew abandoned there. The loyal men took refuge in a fort, where they resisted the pirates. Jim had valuable information, but also the dangerous habit of acting without consulting anyone.
