Make plans and talk about the future

Use ir a with an infinitive to describe Spanish plans, suggest meeting times and distinguish a future intention from travel to a destination.

What you’ll learn

  • Form ir a + infinitive with different subjects.
  • Suggest and negotiate a simple plan.
  • Distinguish a future intention from a destination phrase.

An intention has two verbs

Ir a + infinitive is a common way to express a future intention or expectation. Conjugate ir for the subject, keep a, and leave the action in the infinitive: voy a estudiar, vas a salir, vamos a comer. The construction can refer to tomorrow or a more distant plan; 'near future' is a teaching label, not a strict clock limit.

Compare Voy a la biblioteca with Voy a estudiar. The first phrase gives a destination after a; the second gives an infinitive action. A longer sentence can include both: Voy a ir a la biblioteca. A time expression such as mañana or el próximo sábado makes the intended timing clearer.

Mañana voy a estudiar en casa.

Tomorrow I am going to study at home.

Vamos a visitar a Ana el sábado.

We are going to visit Ana on Saturday.

Voy a la estación.

I am going to the station.

Agree on a workable plan

¿Quedamos a las seis? suggests meeting at six. You can accept with De acuerdo or explain a conflict with No puedo a esa hora. Offer an alternative instead of ending the exchange: ¿Y a las siete? Tener que can explain a prior obligation: Tengo que trabajar hasta las seis.

Present-tense forms can also refer to a scheduled future event when context supplies the time: El tren sale mañana a las ocho. Use the simplest clear construction for the situation. The B1 future lesson introduces a different set of endings; here, focus on intentions and a short negotiation that ends with a confirmed time and place.

¿Quedamos mañana a las seis?

Shall we meet tomorrow at six?

No puedo a las seis. ¿Y a las siete?

I cannot at six. How about seven?

De acuerdo. Nos vemos en la plaza.

Agreed. See you in the square.

Try it now

Offer an alternative time politely.
