Preterite or imperfect: build a past scene

Combine completed events with past background and habits, and explain how a narrator's viewpoint changes the choice between preterite and imperfect.

What you’ll learn

  • Separate background from events that advance a narrative.
  • Recognize how the same verb can take either tense.
  • Use context rather than a single trigger word to choose a tense.

Background and the next event

A story often uses the imperfect to establish a scene and the preterite to report a new event: Llovía cuando llegó el autobús. Llovía looks inside an ongoing situation; llegó presents the arrival as a whole. The tenses work together to show how events relate, rather than dividing verbs into permanent lists.

A repeated habit commonly uses the imperfect, but a counted series within a finished period can use the preterite: Llamé tres veces ayer. An action lasting several hours can also use the preterite when the narrator presents the whole period. Ask whether the sentence frames a boundary or supplies a situation viewed from within.

Leía cuando sonó el teléfono.

I was reading when the phone rang.

Ayer trabajé ocho horas.

Yesterday I worked for eight hours.

De niño visitaba a mi abuela cada domingo.

As a child I used to visit my grandmother every Sunday.

Viewpoint changes the message

Compare Cuando vivía en Lima, caminaba al trabajo with Viví en Lima dos años. The first sentence looks inside a period and describes a routine; the second treats the residence as a bounded part of a life story. Neither tense alone tells us that Lima is a permanent or temporary home.

Words such as cuando, siempre or ayer provide context but do not mechanically select a tense in every sentence. Read the surrounding account and decide what the speaker wants to highlight. When several interpretations are possible, explain the difference rather than declaring only one tense universally correct. In the quizzes, use the explicit viewpoint requested.

La tienda estaba cerrada cuando llegué.

The store was closed when I arrived.

Ayer fui al mercado y compré fruta.

Yesterday I went to the market and bought fruit.

Antes compraba fruta allí cada semana.

I used to buy fruit there every week.

Common mistakes

  • Duration alone does not choose a past tense.
  • Cuando does not force one fixed combination of tenses.
  • Use the narrator's viewpoint and the surrounding context.

Keep these ideas

  • Imperfect can establish a background or habit.
  • Preterite can advance a sequence of completed events.
  • The same situation can be framed differently for different meanings.
